Discovering the Identity God Has Given You
by Kayla Kennada
King David famously asks in Psalm 8:4, “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” He was in awe that our all-knowing and all-powerful God — the One who created everything we can see and everything we can’t — is fascinated with us.
Why Is It Important to Know Who We Are in Christ?
Knowing your identity in Christ is essential. Mainly because it replaces the shifting, pressure-filled labels of the world with an unchanging foundation. It frees you from the burden of constantly proving your worth. In addition it anchors your self-worth in God’s unconditional love, and provides unshakeable confidence during life’s inevitable challenges.
In Christ, your identity is completely transformed. Previously you were defined by your past, your failures, or the world’s standards. Now you are defined entirely by God’s grace and love. Scripture explicitly reveals that anyone united with Jesus is a completely new creature. Each one with a distinct purpose, security, and standing before God.
Key Characteristics of Our Identity in Christ
1. A New Creation
When you gave your life to Christ, something happened that no amount of self-improvement could ever produce. You were remade. 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us the old life is gone and a new one has begun. This isn’t a patch or an upgrade. It’s a total transformation from the inside out. Galatians 2:20 takes it further. No longer are you living, but Christ is living in you. That means the life you’re walking in now isn’t powered by your own willpower. On the contrary, it’s powered by His presence within you. And Ephesians 2:10 reminds us this new creation wasn’t an accident. You are God’s handiwork. He created you on purpose, for purpose, with good works already prepared in advance for you to walk in.
2. Loved and Adopted
Before you ever did anything to earn it, God moved to bring you into His family. John 1:12 says that receiving Christ gives you the right to become a child of God. Not a distant relation, but a son or daughter with full standing. Ephesians 1:5 shows this wasn’t an afterthought. God predestined your adoption according to the pleasure of His will. He wanted you. 1 John 3:1 invites us to marvel at this: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” And Jesus doesn’t stop at family status. John 15:15 tells us He calls us friends. That means sharing His heart and His purposes with us as a trusted companion.
3. Forgiven and Justified
Romans 8:1 declares there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. This is not partial forgiveness, or probation. Instead it is a full and final release from guilt. Ephesians 1:7 shows us the cost. It was redemption through His blood, forgiveness based on the riches of His grace. That is not according to what we deserve. 2 Corinthians 5:21 is one of the most staggering exchanges in Scripture: He who knew no sin became sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. That’s not just forgiveness. That’s a complete transfer of standing. And because of that, Romans 5:1 says we have peace with God through faith. The war is over. You’re not on trial anymore.
4. Secure and Victorious
Colossians 2:10 says you are complete in Him. You are not almost enough, not still lacking, but whole. Purely because of who He is, not because of what you’ve accumulated. Romans 8:37–39 is a declaration of unshakable security: nothing, not death, not life, not angels, not demons, not anything in all creation can separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus. That’s not a hope; that’s a promise with no loopholes. And Philippians 3:20 reminds us our citizenship is in heaven. This world is not your final address. You belong to a Kingdom that cannot be shaken. Victory isn’t something you’re striving for; it’s something you’re standing in.
5. Set Apart and Empowered
1 Peter 2:9 calls you a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession. You are set apart not to be isolated, but to declare His praises. 2 Corinthians 5:20 gives you your assignment: you are Christ’s ambassador, as though God were making His appeal through you. That’s authority and responsibility wrapped together. 1 Corinthians 6:19 grounds it all in intimacy. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you. You’re not just representing God from a distance. He has taken up residence in you, empowering you to carry out the very purpose He set apart.
Living From Your Identity
In Psalm 139:14, King David declared: “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
Finally, you are not an accident; there is a plan for your life. Your value does not come from what you do or how you look, Instead your value comes from your Maker. You don’t have to strive to become who you already are in Christ. You are a new creation. Now you are loved and adopted, forgiven and justified, secure and victorious, as well as set apart and empowered. Not because you earned it, but because He gave it. Let that truth settle into your heart today. This is who you are.
