The Holy Spirit’s Help in Prayer

By Pastor Wendall Ward

Our Helper, The Holy Spirit

Thank God we have a Helper. The Holy Spirit’s intercession for believers is always in alignment with the Father’s will.

Consider what Romans says about the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:26-28… The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know that for which God wants us to pray. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. 28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. NLT

The Spirit Steps in to Intercede on our Behalf

Creation groans and we ourselves groan as we wait for redemption (Romans 8:18-25). In the same way, the Spirit also comes alongside us in our moments of weakness. We often do not know what we should pray for or how to express our deepest needs and desires. Yet, the Spirit steps in to intercede on our behalf. He communicates for us with groanings too deep for words. These expressions go beyond the limitations of human language into a realm beyond what we can ask or think.

Approaching Prayer

Often believers approach prayer with their own desires and intentions. However, these may not always align with the mind of Christ regarding a particular matter. Frequently, we rely on the promises found in Scripture to guide our prayers. However, we may overlook the possibility that the Father has a different plan. One that perfectly fits His purpose for us (Romans 8:28).

Praying in the Spirit

In such moments, praying in the Spirit, or praying in tongues, becomes the most effective way to seek God’s will. Then we are assured that we pray His mind or will on the matter. Another benefit of this form of prayer is that it allows us to move beyond the distractions. We can pass by the anxieties and even the will of our soul. Instead of prayers shaped by emotion or personal reasoning, our petitions rise from the quiet, assured resolve of the Spirit within us. In this way, the Spirit intercedes on our behalf, ensuring that our prayers are in harmony with God’s purpose and will.

Alignment With the Father’s Will

The truth is that God searches and knows the depths of our hearts. In addition, He understands the mind of the Spirit, which is the mind of Christ. This is because the Spirit’s intercession for believers is always in alignment with the Father’s will. Through this, we are assured that even in our most vulnerable moments, when words fail us, the Spirit is faithfully bringing our needs before God. It is this confidence that enables our persistent intercession and the manifestation of God’s glorious will.
