What is Revelation?
By scriptural understanding, “revelation” is the pulling back of a spiritual veil to illuminate or reveal divine truth and insight. It produces “elevation” in the sense that in revelation we are lifted above our natural abilities and limitations of understanding. So we are elevated into an otherwise unattainable perspective. This new information is about God and his kingdom, about ourselves and about the world around us.
Believers do not rise through human ambition or worldly education. In God’s kingdom, we are lifted instead by the level of divine truth we have received. And also the insight that has been illuminated in our hearts.
Jesus introduces this principle in John 3:3-5… Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. “How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born! Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter (experience the realities of) the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.
Ephesians 5:25-27 further explains this principle…Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. NIV
How Does Revelation Bring Elevation?
Biblical revelation activates divine elevation through three core spiritual experiences:
1. Through the revelation of Jesus Christ
Matt 16:13-20… When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” NIV
In Matthew 16:17-19, when Simon Peter received the divine revelation that Jesus was the Christ, Jesus immediately elevated his status, changed his name, and handed him the “keys of the kingdom.” Elevation and spiritual authority respond to the recognition of who Christ is.
2. Through the working of God’s sovereign Word
Psalm 119:130 states, “The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.”
Job 29:2-3… “How I long for the months gone by, for the days when God watched over me, when his lamp shone upon my headand by his light I walked through darkness!
Ps 119:104-105… I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore, I hate every wrong path. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.
In biblical symbolism, darkness represents ignorance. While light represents revelation and truth as well as the understanding by which we relate to God and his will. The shift happens when God’s word transitions from a written letter to an illuminated truth in a believer’s heart. Therefore, it breaks through our natural limitations and elevates our understanding of his “good, acceptable and perfect will” (Romans 12).
3. Through the Holy Spirit speaking directly to us
John 16:13-15… But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. NIV
Galatians 2:1-2, the Apostle Paul writes, “Fourteen years later I went up again to Jerusalem, this time with Barnabas. I took Titus along also. I went in response to a revelation and set before them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. But I did this privately to those who seemed to be leaders, for fear that I was running or had run my race in vain.
Revelation allows a person to see past physical circumstances. A classic example is the contrast between Abraham and Lot. Lot chose his path based on physical sight and ended up in Sodom. Whereas Abraham walked by the revelation of God’s promise and was elevated to become the father of nations. When you seek God, He reveals your true identity, divine potential, and the exact purpose you were created to fulfill. Knowing your God-given destination protects you from the traps of the enemy and positions you for continuous advancement.
For example, Paul’s entire ministry, authority, and spiritual advancement were not products of human appointment. But instead as a direct byproduct of the divine insight given to him by God. The trajectory of his life demonstrates that spiritual elevation is determined by the spiritual understanding. The kind of understanding that only comes from revelation of the Spirit and the Word.
Conclusion
In conclusion, revelation is not merely information from God. It is the illumination that comes from the Word and the Spirit. These insights are sent to lift a believer into greater understanding, purpose, and authority. We receive revelation as we encounter Jesus Christ. And also when we receive the living power of God’s Word, and listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit. Then our spiritual eyes are opened, and our lives are elevated beyond natural limits. What God reveals determines how we walk, where we stand, and what we can accomplish in His kingdom. Therefore, we must continually seek Him with open hearts. Because every fresh revelation from God brings us into a higher dimension of grace, clarity, and destiny.
