Maintaining Our Eternal Perspective

by Pastor Wendall Ward

Sometimes it is difficult to balance the pull between the present circumstances and an eternal perspective.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 speaks to this. “Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

The Priority of an Eternal Perspective

Throughout life, we encounter relentless challenges and demands that can gradually wear us down. These pressures may cause us to lose motivation or hope. Especially as we realize that our physical bodies are inevitably subject to decline. However, the reality of weakness in our body does not have to determine our outlook. Paul’s message to us emphasizes that our bodies may fail. However, there is a deeper comfort in knowing that our inner life is being constantly renewed.

This unseen process of transformation is crucial for how we live today. It is not merely a temporary fix, but an ongoing renewal that prepares us for eternal life. As a result, our perspective should extend beyond the visible. We fix our eyes not only on our outward circumstances and focus instead on the enduring work happening within us. This inner renewal equips us for a glorious eternity. It reminds us that the most important changes are often those that cannot be seen.

The Balance of an Eternal Perspective

Maintaining an eternal perspective does not mean we neglect our present, earthly needs. It is important to recognize that caring for the mind and body is not in conflict with spiritual focus. If we ignore these needs, we risk becoming so “heavenly minded that we are of no earthly good.” Our effectiveness and productivity in life are shaped by how we steward ourselves. Our job is to balance all aspects of our triune humanity of spirit, soul, and body. Paul illustrates this holistic approach in 1 Thessalonians 5:23, where he writes, “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.”

These words provide assurance that God is faithfully working within us. Even among life’s pressures He brings about balance and perspective. Our confidence rests in His commitment to sanctify every part of our being. Thus enabling us to live with both earthly responsibility and an eternal outlook.
