How to Live an Abundant Life

Living the Dream

The most popular goal for American citizens is to live the American dream. It is the desire to achieve material things and to live comfortably. That is what the world calls success. There is nothing wrong with living the dream, unless we stop there. There is so much more to life. Jesus came to give us life, and life more abundantly (John 10:10). He came to give us a life of truth that has more meaning and purpose beyond material things.

Because we live in a physical world we tend to think more about physical things. What we need to remember is that we are a spirit living in a physical body. When we accept Jesus into our hearts, we are born anew spiritually, from above (John 3:3). We are awakened to the spirit realm. We have the Spirit of God living within us. Paul taught in Philippians 3:20 that our citizenship is in heaven. As citizens of heaven, yet living in the world; we are ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20). Our purpose is to represent Him in the earth.

God is Revealing Himself

Colossians 1:16 states “For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him.” We were created by God and in His image and likeness. I share many times that the Bible is God’s Word revealing to us who He is. He is love and goodness. Knowing this means we can trust Him and receive His purpose for our lives.

In Genesis 1:26, God said He would make mankind and give them dominion over the earth and everything in it. Then in verse 28 He said for man to be fruitful, and multiply, and to replenish the earth, and subdue it. Then, in Genesis 2:7-15 God made the first man called Adam and placed him in the Garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. We can see then, that man was created with the natural purpose of taking care of the earth. But, we were also created with a spiritual purpose.

We Are in Him

Not only does the Bible reveal to us who God is, but it also reveals who we are in Him. We need to know that His infinite power is in us (Ephesians 3:20). We are to move further than our human abilities and perform supernatural works as Jesus did. Jesus informed us in John 14:12 that “whoever believes in Me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father”.

Paul prayed in Ephesians 1:17-21 that we might know “what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe”. Along with this power to perform the supernatural, we also have been given authority as a king in the earth (Rev.1:6). This means we can speak to our situations and they will obey us (Mk. 11:23-24). In other words, we can dominate over the unseen (spiritual) principalities that try to hinder us from receiving all that the Father has for us.

Fight the Good Fight of Faith

To sum this up, we are not to be passive and take what life dishes out to us. We are to be assertive and proactive to fight the good fight of faith (1 Timothy 6:12). 2 Corinthians 5:7 tells us that we walk by faith, not by sight. Our focus is on the unseen and eternal, rather than what is seen and temporary. We put our confidence and trust in God who has provided us with all things that pertain to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3).

To operate by the Spirit of God with victory in the physical world is the ultimate adventure. This is the life more abundantly that Jesus came to give us. He deserves all our praise. “To the One sitting on the throne and to the Lamb belong praise, honor, glory and power forever and ever!” – Revelation 5:13
