Did you know that we have the fingerprints of God all over us? Our DNA is just one of many beautiful testimonies that we are God’s own handiwork. (Isaiah 45:8-9)
Science and Christianity
To begin with people often think that science and Christianity are at odds. I have found that studying the science of Creation has deepened my faith and appreciation for God’s incredible intelligence and wonderful design.
In reality science and Christianity fit together. Many of the famous scientists of the past were believers. Galileo, Isaac Newton, and George Washington Carver are a few. Today Christian scientists have written Bible based science curriculum for schools. I’m grateful to teach in a Christian school and to be able to talk about God’s design with my students.
Science Confirms Scripture
Scientists in recent years have mapped the code of the human genome that contains three billion letters. In the process completing this huge task, they found many references to the divine nature in our cells. So much so that President Clinton said these scientists were “learning the language in which God created life.” The head of the Human Genome Project, Francis S. Collins said that DNA is “our own instruction book, previously known only to God.”
Science has been able to confirm the scriptures and show us that we are valuable, unique, and special to God. Ephesians 2:10 says “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
We Were Planned and Designed by God
Most importantly we are not random. A big bang did not create us. God is our Designer, and we were planned. We are examples of what David said in Psalm 139:13-15
For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
God Left an Autograph for Us to Find in Our DNA
DNA is one of those areas that shows God’s beautiful design or his fingerprints. Even in the smallest particles that make us who we are, God has left an autograph for us to find.
Inside each cell of our body is a very tightly wound spiral of DNA that includes an incredibly detailed code that some scientists call the language of God. Each cell contains 6 feet of DNA that provides the information needed to form all of the proteins our bodies are made from.
This information found in each of our cells is so specific it literally makes us who we are. That’s why we can use DNA for paternity testing and also in criminal investigations.
What is very inspiring and fascinating to me is that the proteins in each strand of DNA follow a repeating pattern. If you haven’t seen a model of DNA, it looks like a spiral staircase.
It is even more astounding to me is that there is a carefully crafted message in each of our cells. God’s autograph is in a chemical alphabet made of four letters. Biochemist Michael Denton says that DNA “vastly exceeds that of any other known system.” Meaning that they haven’t seen any other system quite like it.
The Message in the Pattern
This repeating pattern is where we find the message from our Creator. In that spiral staircase pattern, there are 10 proteins on the first stair, and the second one has 5. Then the third stair has 6, and the fourth has 5. This pattern of 10,5,6,5 continues over and over in the six feet of DNA in each of our cells.
Yahweh in Our DNA!
Here is where it gets interesting. First let me explain that each letter in the Hebrew alphabet is assigned a number. That means in the original language of the Bible these proteins of different numbers have corresponding letters. The numbers 10, 5, 6 and 5 represent the letters Y, H, W, H in the Hebrew alphabet. Those letters are the way to write the name of Yawheh in Hebrew. The vowels are left out and it is considered too sacred to speak. The name means our Powerful Creator, also known as Elohim. In the end, God’s name, the first one mentioned in the Bible (Genesis 1:1) is spelled out over and over in our DNA!
I believe that is awe inspiring, jaw dropping, beautiful, and comforting all at the same time. David wrote Psalm 139 as a revelation for all of us, and Jeremiah 1:5 says before God formed us in the womb, He knew us.
We have the fingerprints of God all over us. Our DNA is a phenomenal testimony that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.
