Created to Create: Embracing Our Divine Purpose

by Kayla Kennada

In the beginning, God spoke everything into existence with the power of His word. “Let there be light,” He declared, and light sprang forth from the darkness. He commanded the waters and sky to separate, and they obeyed His voice. The moon and stars came into being at His spoken word, each celestial body taking its appointed place in the heavens.

Yet, when it came time to place humans on the earth, something notably different occurred. God said, “Let us make man in our image.” Then He did something extraordinary—He formed man with His own hands from the dust of the earth. While everything else was spoken into existence, humanity was personally crafted by the Creator Himself.

The Divine Image Within Us

This distinction reveals something remarkable about our nature and calling. God is fundamentally a Creator, bringing forth everything through His spoken word. Because we are created in His image—as His children bearing His likeness—we too are creators. We carry within us the divine spark of creativity, the ability to envision, design, and bring forth new realities.

This truth has profound implications for how we approach life and faith. Too often as Christians, we fall into the trap of praying about a situation and then passively waiting for God to act. We treat prayer like placing an order and then sitting back to wait for delivery. But God’s creative work is finished. He has entrusted the ongoing governance and development of creation to us, His image-bearers.

The Call to Active Partnership

If meaningful change is going to happen in our world, it’s up to us to be the agents of that change. God created us with minds to think, hands to work, and hearts to love. He equipped us with the capability to accomplish what He has placed us in charge of. To guide us in this monumental task, He provided His Word as our instruction manual. He gave us the Holy Spirit as our constant companion and counselor.

The enemy of God’s plan isn’t necessarily external opposition—it’s often our own internal resistance. We become too comfortable in our routines, too ignorant of our potential, or too lazy to engage with purpose. Too often we are fearful of stepping into our calling. Within this frame of mind, we try to pass the responsibility back to God. We overlook the fact that He has already equipped and empowered us for the work ahead.

Finding Our Purpose in Creation

We are placed here for a specific purpose and reason. Nothing in God’s creation exists without meaning, and this is especially true for humanity. Yet we often live as if our primary purpose is self-gratification—pursuing what pleases us. Without considering the deeper “why” of our existence we miss our true identity and reason for being.

This misalignment between our design and our lifestyle creates dissatisfaction in our souls. When we don’t fulfill our God-given purpose, we inevitably feel empty and restless. Driven by this spiritual void, we seek fulfillment in temporary pleasures—whether through substances like drugs and alcohol, experiences like extreme sports, or various forms of entertainment and distraction.

The Difference Between Happiness and Joy

These pursuits might provide momentary happiness, but they can never satisfy the deeper longing of our hearts. There’s a crucial difference between being momentarily happy and being eternally satisfied with joy. Happiness depends on circumstances and external stimuli. It’s fleeting and must be constantly renewed. Joy, however, springs from the deep well of purpose and meaning that comes from living in alignment with our Creator’s design.

When we embrace our role as co-creators with God, when we step boldly into the purposes He has prepared for us, we tap into a source of satisfaction that transcends temporary pleasure. This is the joy that remains constant even in difficult circumstances, the peace that surpasses understanding, the fulfillment that comes from knowing we are living as we were designed to live.

Stepping Into Our Creative Calling

The invitation before us is clear: stop waiting for God to do what He has already empowered us to do. Recognize that as image-bearers of the Creator, we are called to create. We are called to build, to heal, to restore, and to bring forth God’s kingdom on earth. This doesn’t mean we work apart from God, but rather that we work in partnership with Him, guided by His Word and empowered by His Spirit.

Whether your calling is in business, ministry, education, the arts, healthcare, or any other field, you have been uniquely designed and equipped to make a difference. The world needs what God has placed within you. The question isn’t whether you have a purpose—the question is whether you’ll have the courage to discover it and the dedication to fulfill it.

In the end, true satisfaction comes not from what we can get from life, but from what we can give to it. When we align our lives with our Creator’s purpose, when we step into our role as His co-creators, we find not just momentary happiness but lasting joy. This is the abundant life that Christ promised—a  life lived in full partnership with our Creator. It is His desire for us to be actively participating in His ongoing work of creation and redemption.
