Divine Adoption: Understanding Our Identity as Children of God

by Dr. Johnnie Blount

The profound declaration in 2 Corinthians 6:16 that mankind is “the temple of God” presents a truth so magnificent it challenges our comprehension. The Almighty God dwells within us. When we truly grasp this reality —it transforms our entire understanding of who we are.

The Almighty Father Within Us

No power or force in the universe surpasses our heavenly Father, the Lord Almighty. When this divine force resides within us, the impossible becomes possible for those who truly believe. This isn’t mere positive thinking; it’s the fundamental reality of divine indwelling.

Consider the remarkable truth of 2 Corinthians 6:18, where the God of the universe calls mankind His sons and daughters. The Creator of all things desired more than to be our Savior, protector, or provider. He longed to be our Father. He has received us as His own children. What an incomprehensible privilege: to claim that our Father is not merely human, but God Almighty Himself.

The Revolutionary Message of the Resurrection

When Jesus rose from the dead, His words to Mary Magdalene in John 20:17 carried revolutionary significance. He instructed her not to touch Him, for He had not yet ascended to His Father. But notice the profound message He gave her to deliver to His disciples: “I go to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.”

In that moment, Jesus revealed something extraordinary. The disciples—His friends—had become His brethren. The accusation that Jesus made Himself equal with God was true. But He also made us equal with Himself in our relationship to the Father.

From Servants to Sons and Daughters

This transformation is staggering to contemplate. No longer do we approach the Creator as distant servants calling upon Elohim or Jehovah. Through divine adoption, we now call the Creator of the universe “Father.” This adoption, as described in Romans 8:15-17, grants us full rights as heirs of the Father.

Jesus, who was accused of claiming equality with God, has elevated mankind to share in that divine relationship. We are no longer merely created beings seeking favor from a distant deity. We are beloved children, joint heirs with Christ, carrying within us the very presence of the Almighty.

Living in Light of This Truth

We are temples of the living God, children of the Most High, and heirs of divine promises. When we meditate on these truths—how can we live as anything less than confident, beloved sons and daughters? This isn’t arrogance. It’s the humble recognition of what God has accomplished through His grace.

The implications are profound. The God of the universe calls us His children. He dwells within us as His temple. We are joint heirs with Christ. If we know these things are truth, then we can face every challenge with the confidence that comes from knowing whose we are.

This is the heart of the Gospel—not just forgiveness of sins, but complete transformation of identity. We have gone from strangers to family, from servants to sons and daughters, from empty vessels to temples of the living God. What a reason to live with holy confidence, knowing that our Father is Almighty God Himself.
