From Skeptic To Believer
The world has no shortage of opinions about what it means to become a Christian. As a teenager, I was one of the skeptics. I thought Christians were boring and too spiritual to relate to real people living real lives. I found out just how wrong I was.
People who haven’t experienced this kind of transformation often don’t understand it. And when we don’t understand something, we tend to criticize it. That’s not condemnation. It’s simply human nature. It’s hard to see the inside of something you’ve never entered.
What Does It Actually Mean?
Here’s what becoming a Christian does not mean: it does not mean you become better than anyone else. What it does mean is that you are forgiven; completely and unconditionally, for everything you’ve ever done or will do wrong. Not because of anything you’ve earned or accomplished, but because of what Jesus has already done for you. You are freed from the weight of your sins and He receives all the glory.
The Christian life is anything but boring. You discover a fulfillment you’ve never known and a sense of purpose, faith, power, love, and grace that fills you from the inside out. There is always more to learn, more to experience, and that journey produces genuine growth and maturity.
There’s Nothing Better
My love for fun has never wavered. If anything, it has only grown stronger. These days, I find myself enjoying life more deeply and more fully than ever before. The entertainment I embrace now comes without the unwanted aftermath of hangovers or guilt. Instead, a life filled with good, clean fun leaves behind something far more rewarding: lasting memories and a sense of genuine refreshment.
Knowing what I know now, I can relate to people in a far richer way. I have lived without Jesus and I have lived with Him. I know the difference from the inside out. That experience has given me a passion to help others receive what I have received and it has been one of my greatest joys to have led some of them to Jesus.
When you have personally tasted and seen that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8), something shifts deep within you. You don’t follow Him out of obligation. You love Him because life on this side of that decision is simply, undeniably better.
Everything Changes
The peace of God replaces the weight of sin. Grace is given freely, and shame loses its grip. The joy of the Lord becomes your countenance. You become a new person — your slate wiped clean, your story rewritten from a place of hope.
“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)
God is no longer just a distant deity — He becomes your Father, and Jesus becomes your brother. You inherit everlasting life and every promise written in His Word. Where you once faced life’s hardest moments without a foundation to stand on, you now have something solid and unshakable beneath your feet. You have the authority to speak the Word of God over your circumstances and actually see results. The mistakes that once left marks on your life are forgiven. The patterns that kept setting you back lose their power.
If I were to weigh every pro of living as a Christian against every con, the pros would fill pages. The cons page would be blank. I won’t pretend that Christian living is without sorrow or pain. We still live in this world, and this world is broken. But we are not of this world. We walk by faith, not by sight. And the joy of the Lord is our strength through every season of life.
I agree wholeheartedly with Paul, who wrote in Philippians 3:8 that everything this world offers is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus as Lord.
There is nothing like it. There is nothing better.
